Carrefour
History
Following the 2001
census; and facing the impact of both a demographic decline by the exodus of
youth towards urban centres and the ageing of its population, the community and local officials of
Saint-Léonard
became interested in attracting immigrants. After consultations with the
community, the Carrefour d’immigration rurale in Saint-Léonard was created in
April 2005. Thus, Agriculture and Agri-Food
Canada, through its Rural Development
Initiative,
joined with the community of Saint-Léonard to create, within the framework of a
pilot scheme, a durable model of intervention in French-speaking rural
immigration.
